Cardly · Impact & Sustainability

A handshake shouldn't cost a tree.

Every paper business card printed ends up in a landfill within weeks — 88% of them, to be specific. Cardly replaces that paper with a link, a QR, and a tap. The planet gets a break. Your drawer does too.

The paper problem

7.2 million trees. Every year. For a product most people throw away on day two.

Roughly 10 billion business cards are printed globally each year. 88% are discarded within a week. Printing them burns pulp, water, solvents, and diesel — and then we ship them across the country in trucks.

Paper card · the old way

One card's footprint

  • ~7g of paper pulp per card
  • 16–20L of water for pulp & ink
  • Shelf life: 2 days to 2 weeks
  • Destination: 88% landfill
  • Reprint when you change roles
Cardly · the new way

One Cardly card

  • 0g of paper, forever
  • ~0.01L water (server cooling)
  • Lifespan: as long as you want
  • Destination: a contact, saved
  • Edit once — every old QR stays valid
Lifecycle comparison

What really happens to a paper card.

Every paper business card makes the same five-stop journey. We cut it to one step: share.

Harvest

Trees felled for virgin pulp, or bleached recycled stock.

Print

Offset presses, solvent inks, foil, die-cuts — all energy-hungry.

Ship

Diesel-powered delivery to offices and homes around the world.

Hand out

Exchanged, pocketed, forgotten. 88% never make it into a CRM.

Landfill

Coated, laminated, or foil-stamped — usually non-recyclable.

Cardly replaces all five steps with one tap.
Zero harvest, zero printing, zero shipping, zero landfill. Just a link.
Our ESG framework

Environmental, social, governance — on one screen.

We keep it boringly transparent. Here's the exact shape of our commitments, measured quarterly and reported here first.

E
Environmental

Lighter on the planet, every scan.

We cut the paper, the ink, the truck, and the landfill — then offset what's left of our own footprint.

  • Carbon-neutral servers (100% renewable energy)
  • 1% of revenue to verified reforestation
  • Zero physical merchandise, zero shipping
  • Device-first storage cuts cloud energy draw
S
Social

Networking that includes everyone.

A good handshake doesn't care where you're from. Cardly works in low-bandwidth, on low-end phones, in two languages (so far).

  • Free tier forever — no gated core features
  • WCAG AA accessibility on all screens
  • Works offline — shared QRs stay valid
  • English & Spanish, more on the way
G
Governance

Transparent by default.

Open numbers, honest privacy, and a board that actually meets. No "partnerships" we can't name.

  • Public sustainability report every 6 months
  • GDPR & CCPA aligned — plain-English privacy
  • No data brokers, no ad SDKs, no dark patterns
  • Independent security audit, yearly
Methodology

How we count a "saved tree."

We use the UK FSC's conversion factor: one mature tree yields roughly 8,333 standard business cards across its processing chain. Every card shared via Cardly that would otherwise have been printed counts toward the total — but only the first time you share it.

Numbers are audited quarterly by South Pole. Methodology document on request.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Four goals we move the needle on.

Cardly's product design and business model contribute directly to these four SDGs. We map progress against each every year.

SDG 12

Responsible consumption

Zero paper, zero shipping, zero waste in a business-card exchange.

SDG 13

Climate action

Every Cardly share avoids printing emissions. Our own ops are carbon-neutral.

SDG 15

Life on land

Trees stay standing. 1% of revenue funds verified reforestation projects.

SDG 9

Industry & innovation

Building the low-carbon infrastructure for professional networking.
